SXSW: Rachael Ray Feedback 2014

How is it that I have never been to this event?  Maybe it has to do with the early start time and my former other half not doing mornings.

It was a lot of fun.  Next year we will get there earlier.  We only got in earlier than we should have, because I have a sweet friend.  We still would have gotten in but it would have taken longer.IMG_1450[1]

The drink lines were easy.  The food lines were a mess.  We may have not been at the end of the food line when we got in.  It was hard to tell.  But EVERYONE who got in, got food from what I could tell.  When we left at 3 pm, the line was still all of the way around the block.  OUCH!IMG_1447[1]

Music was behind on schedule but well organized.  Two outdoor stages.  When one stopped, the other started.  Well until Blondie.  I am not sure why they didn’t get on stage on time.  The music was good.  Bob didn’t play enough but he played my favorite song of his.  Rachael’s husband’s band, The Cringe was good, i’d never heard them.  He called her out from the stage and it was super sweet.  AWWW.  IMG_1420[1]

Here’s the scoop on the grub and the recipes that I think match with her descriptions from her signs and her talking about the food on Kimmel earlier this week :

All of mine were sans bread.  Guess what?  Bread makes a great serving vessel.  But so do fingers 😉

I will be making a couple of these things myself in the future!  Yummers as she would say!IMG_1375[1]

There was no dessert!  I wanted dessert.  Instead I had more grapefruit and vodka.

SXSW fails and wins

  • We were 5 people short of getting into Kimmel Live on Friday to see Lil Wayne and Willie Nelson
  • We were so tired from standing in line all day in the sun, that all 3 of us almost fell asleep at dinner
  • We didn’t get downtown for Rachael Ray early enough
  • It rained and rained and rained Saturday morning in line for Rachael’s Party
  • I dropped my drivers license on 9th street.  Thank goodness the dude yelled for me and I ran half a block back to get it.
  • I had a realization that some of my old crowd is just that.  I’ve been cut out I guess
  • The show I wanted to go to on Thursday was actually the day before

  • People watching is ALWAYS a win during SXSW
  • I did at least see Kimmel once and had a guaranteed seat and a good one at that
  • Parking.  We easily found parking both Friday and Saturday.  Shocking
  • We had a nice lunch at Hula Hut on Friday afternoon away from the downtown crowds.
  • My old intern DID get in line for Rachael Ray early enough and we were able to get in line with her
  • The RRFeedback food was delish.  Free food, booze, and music.  How can you go wrong?
  • Coffee before RR Feedback was a great idea.  Until there was no bathroom for 3 hours
  • $1 panchos from my running stash were lifesavers Saturday morning
  • Traffic wasn’t that bad when I’ve needed to come and go from downtown
  • My schedule was very different than it had been in years past and I was completely content.  I saw far less music but far more variety of talent and shows.

Fun Facts Friday-SXSW edition

  • it’s my 10th SXSW!  WOOHOO!
  • Started my week off with Kimmel.  I am trying to figure out how to get in tonight, the last night.
  • I am still reeling from meeting Adam Carolla and I barely spoke to him.  My signed wine bottle is in my kitchen window.
  • I am off today.  I REALLY needed it this week.  I only worked 3 days and they were almost the death of me.  I always try to be off the Friday of SXSW
  • Sister and I are meeting some friends at Rachel Ray’s party tomorrow.  I am so excited! I hear it’s all the rage.  And she caters to everyone’s food needs 🙂  I loved her on Kimmel Wednesday night.  Food and music?  HECK YES!
  • I’m missing my ODB this week pretty badly.  I want to share this wonderful SXSW because it makes my heart happy for a week.  ODB makes my heart happy every day.  I would like those two together.
  • I should be working in my yard today since it’s supposed to rain Saturday and Sunday.  NOPE.  SXSW comes but once a year.  My jungle will be there in a few days.
  • Despite it being SXSW I am dying to go to Gruene and have been all week.  I will be in the area for a whole week for work, so I need to be patient.  I LOVE the area and I love being around my regional coworkers.  It will be a good week of fun and work.

Things I like Thursday: SXSW time again

Tuesday night Dan and I went to our first showcase of SXSW.  I have never started that early in the week.  This kid doesn’t play late on school nights anymore.  This time of year is an exception.

We hit up the Red11 Showcase at the White Horse.  6 bands, $5 (free if you bought a wristband for SXSW).  We’ve never bought bands, you can get by without one for many shows.

Dinner.  Bomb Tacos food truck at the White Horse.  There are many locations of Bomb Tacos but this one is supposedly the best.  Yes, they were the bomb.  I had chicken fajita, veggie, and pulled pork.  Dan had 2 chicken fajita and beef fajita.  They were indeed good.  They offer flour and corn tortillas.  I got mine on corn, but Dan ate the actual tortillas, because I was pretty sure they weren’t gluten free.  So I guess I really had 3 small taco salads.  I am sure I could have ordered that.  Impressed.  I liked the chicken fajita the best, as did Dan.  The also offer nachos and quesadillas.

The show.  Lincoln Durham, The Crooks, Dirty River Boys, Turnpike Troubadours, American Aquarium, and Jason Eady.  We stayed for the first 5.  I didn’t know it was inside.  I wore a sweater and jeans.  I was SO hot.  I am never hot.  Plus it was SUPER crowded in the bar.  I actually, during the last act, bought a band tshirt to change into.  Of course, when we went to leave, I was cold again and put the sweater back on.  Whatever, I really wanted a Dirty River Boys shirt anyhow.

Apparently there are a ton of tall people in town.  I was close for Dirty River, but I couldn’t see much at all.  Doesn’t help that most of the guys in the band are also short!  I have seen them several times, my first was at SXSW last year.  LOVE them.

My first time seeing the Crooks.  They had a lot of instruments in their set. 4 different types of guitars, banjo, maracas, tambourine, drums, accordion, trumpet, and some other percussion thing I don’t know the name of.  I LOVE accordions!  They were fun.  I think i’d like them live more than on the radio.

My 2nd time seeing American Aquarium.  Last year’s SXSW was my first.  Dan LOVES them.   That’s why we were so close, he’s a total man-fan.

Turnpike Troubadours.  Really like them, but I haven’t seen them much.  Good stuff.

I got 3 hours of sleep that night, but it was totally worth it 🙂  Now looking ahead to see what, if any, other shows I’ll do this year.  So far, I have been working so much, that I’ve had 0 time to study.  Chronicle is being scoured over now.

SXSW 2012-Day 3

And day 3 is where is all fell apart for me 😦  I’d already been having issues standing Thursday and Friday, but Saturday it all went south.

I was supposed to be meeting AK for a run at the lake that morning.  That never happened.  I was so stiff and achy it was bad. It was so bad that I caved and took Alleve, which I rarely do.  Instead my day started before noon at Continental Club with Dan.

Got to see lots of good old friends, made my heart happy.

Saw Lucero for the 3rd time in that many days.  Don’t worry, I saw about 20 different bands total 😉

This made me laugh

I made it until about 7:30 before I called it quits and went back to our friend’s house.  I ate dinner and went to bed after that 😦  I was in bed before the main showcase at Cedar Street even started.  Not the way I wanted to end my SXSW 2012 😦

SXSW Saturday

Started the day off with 12 miles.  12 long, very hot and humid miles.

Showered, made some lunch.  Guess it was more of brunch, since it was right before 11 am.

My version of Claim Jumper’s Jamaican Sweet Potato.  SO good.  This time I made the potatoes in the crockpot while I was running.  Then sautéed green onions, bell pepper, red bell pepper, chicken breast, pineapple, and Jamaican Jerk spices.  Kept me full all afternoon, which was what I was aiming for 🙂

Then the music.  First Dan and I hit Revolution Bar.  Eastside.  If you don’t know Austin, Eastside is the “not so privileged area” (that’s how the TIR summary referred to such neighborhoods, sounds PC to me).  Anyhow, I am pretty sure that it used to be a Mexican Discotheca.  It was a pretty rad little dive.  We were there for the 9 Bullets showcase.

We were actually early, only because the noon band didn’t play.  We were there to see new music we didn’t already know.  That’s the beauty of SXSW, getting exposed to new things….

Like “2 Cow Garage”:

I was bummed that we couldn’t stay for Glossary.  Dan was heading to Houston with friends to see Ryan Bingham (I opted to catch other friends at SXSW).  This place is not within walking distance of any of the other places, so I didn’t have a choice but to move on 😦  Plus I had to drop Dan off near Whole Foods, which was like 8 miles away.

I sent Dan on his way and then headed on to Molotov…

Yes, that is one of the bars that bachelor Brad owns, and yes, he was there.  So was the brother.

Saw several bands including “Reid Wilson and his So Called Friends.”

And then Reid Wilson and his girlfriend

Aren’t they cute?  That’s my friend Heather from Dallas.  Hopefully soon she will be Heather in Austin 😉  She said she’s going to start running (holding you to it, I know you are reading this, hehe).

Celebrated our friend Sarah (in the green), 21st birthday.  Yes, us geezers have a few young friends.

Molotov has a giant open air window, so that’s why we are so shady 😉

Then off to Waterloo Records (they do all day-all week showcases) down the street for HAYES!  I love me some Hayes Carll (and yes, I saw him last Saturday night).

First it was Neon Trees.  I was FAR from the stage, they’d just started when I got there…

Needless to say, I got A LOT closer for Hayes once the Neon Trees fans left.  By time Hayes went on, it was even more crowded than before.

Hayes was wonderful, as usual.  One the way back to the car, I stopped to get some GF oats.  I only walked out with $15 worth of stuff.  MIRACLE

That’s the Whole Foods flagship store.  It used to look gigantic until that skyscraper moved in.

Finale was sister date at Vivo.  MUCH better than last time.  Sat on the patio for a few hours and caught up.  The enchiladas were extra cheesy (really too cheesy and I NEVER say that).  But very good.  If you’ve never been there, the inside is dark, trendy, almost club-like.  And both locations have lots of art-deco mod paintings of boobs.    None of the men in our family like it, I guess it’s too hip for them, hehe

Every lady gets a rose.  Not sure how the 2 of us got one 😉

The day off

I’d been waiting for Friday FOREVER.  A day off, finally.  SXSW, finally.

Got up, got dressed to run, grabbed my gym bag, and drove off to the train station.  Got to the station and realized I had no sunglasses.  Not to run in, not to be outside in all day at SXSW.  I simply cannot tolerate that much sun without sunglasses.  My eyes would go berserk.

Run home, search for shades.  There went the 2nd to last train.  I keep multiple shades in the car, but Dan took my car.  By time I’d found a pair to wear (the 2nd pair from 3M goody bag), the last train had left 😦  I could have driven the truck downtown, but parking during SXSW is near impossible, and in Dan’s truck, I didn’t have the desire or patience.

Drove home and was a bum all day long.  Cleaned some house, got some projects done.  Took a much needed nap, caught up on DVR.  I guess that would be ok with some people for a day off, but it put me in a crummy mood.  I actually almost just got dressed and went to work.

Dan came home, we chilled a while, then decided to drive back up to Georgetown to eat dinner at Fish City Grill.  It was alright.  Since it was Lenten Friday, I couldn’t eat meat, which was fine, because I really wanted some tuna or shrimp.  No tuna, so I opted for peel and eat shrimp (which I got addicted to in Florida over the summer).  I am glad there was no photographic evidence, because I pretty much inhaled them (it was after 8 when we were eating, which is really late to me).  They were alright, not the best i’d ever had.  Dan got raw oysters, which I think are disgusting, he also had grilled shrimp and their cream of jalapeno soup.  I tasted the soup and it was good, but one of those things that is definitely something to be enjoyed in moderation!

We then went to Dan’s office and I “helped” him do some spring cleaning and moving offices.  He said it was helpful and he feels good about what we got accomplished.  I had to practically force him to go, because he didn’t want to, but he was grateful when it was done.   I felt like I was getting in the way, but I was able to do some filing and cleaning.   We got home after 11.  11 is WAY past my pre-long run bedtime, but it was worth it to have an evening with Dan that didn’t involve tv.
