2014 year in review

January

Honestly I don’t remember anything from the first month of the year, except I had a horrible run at 3M.  It was Shiner all over again.  I could not breathe for anything.  I finished and was SO glad to be done.  And I spent some time with ODB which was SO nice.

February

February was crazy.  More than 1 ice storm.  Bought a house by myself, on my birthday. Ran Austin for the first time ever and I felt fine, but my time was disappointing.  My godson turned 1.  I had an admirer hot on my tail and I was not thrilled about that.  Went to see ODB.

March

Another crazy ice storm.  ODB came to my house for the first time and I LOVED every second of it.  He helped me do so many things!  SXSW, I went to see Jimmy Kimmel, met Adam Carolla, and went to Rachel Ray’s party.  Less time and less music but still a fun year. Big work trip.

April

Another work trip, got to see ODB.  San Francisco for LUNA.  Fried my iphone and had to get another.

May

To be honest, I don’t remember anything except missing the Drive By Truckers concert.

June-July

The most  days I think I’ve ever had with ODB in one month!  Vacations, 2 trips here to see me, one there to see him.  Our first vacation together and we didn’t kill each other (and it was amazing).  Saw my college roomie.  Big work function.  Took some added duties at work.

August

Other than Dessert Dash, drawing a blank with August.  I do know it was HOT.

September

Sister’s bday.  It’s the beginning of the year at work, I don’t remember much.  Ran relay and I did pretty horrible.

October

Several work trips.  Several ODB trips. Several really good runs.

November

Another work trip.  BIG speedbump for ODB and I.  Made it through and I love him even more after all of it.  Several ODB trips.

December

LOTS of ODB (not enough).  LOTS of work.  Christmas with family.  Time with my BFF and godson.  An extended drive down 290 (smirk).   And I closed the door on someone who no longer deserves to be part of my life.

In 2015 I look forward to the story that will be written.  It is my hope that my love for ODB continues to grow, I get to see my godson more, and I spend less time worrying about work and more time enjoying life.  CHEERS!

Back in business

I turned off my blog a few months ago.  ODB suggested I bring it back.

So I went and looked back at the last blog I did.  Wow how things have changed!

October was a great month for me at work.  Promotion, lots of travel, seeing ODB.  And then things turned.  Damn it, I am crying trying to even type right now.  We made it through, but it wasn’t easy.  I am not sure I was as strong as I should have been.  Looking back I really think some of my reactions weren’t the best, but they were honest.

So I’m back to blogging.  About what, I don’t know.  I don’t follow weight watchers anymore and haven’t in a couple of years.  I do still cook.  I do still have thyroid issues.  I still run (sorta).  And i’m still madly in love with ODB 🙂  So topics TBA!

No connection

I didn’t get internet at the new house yet.  I was trying to hold off on things I don’t need like cable and internet.  Honestly, I haven’t missed it except for wanting to blog.   I had to email some pictures to my BFF, so that required a trip to Starbucks with the laptop.

Sheesh, where have I been?

  • Got completely moved into the new house minus my dishes, I need to go grab those Thursday.
  • My kitties LOVE the new house.
  • I have a kick ass backyard and I am dying to make it my own.  I need a grill, and a chair, and a chiminea, and a bird bath, and some new flowers.  Yeah, I foresee a lot of time and money spent on the yard.
  • I already tried to lure birds to my feeder.  They haven’t really come yet.  I love watching birds.  Almost as much as Missy and Chanel do.
  • I volunteered at Austin marathon expo again.   It was good but exhausting.  And I got sick 😦
  • Helped a couple from Mexico get engaged at the Marathon Expo on Friday night.  It was so cute!
  • I ran the Austin half for the first time.  It was a last minute decision.  I did ok considering I had very tired feet and legs and it was HOT.  Plus I haven’t been running a lot.  It’s one of my slower races, but it was faster than 2 hours.  Probably the 2nd hardest course I’ve ever run.  I felt great though.  I don’t even feel like I ran.
  • I’ve not really cooked in my new kitchen yet, I haven’t really been there much.  And I need to buy a microwave! And groceries.
  • I am on a break from work.  Ok, I worked half a day today remotely.  I spent majority of the day on the couch. Tomorrow I am doing NOTHING except making myself incredibly happy.
  • I have taken more leave this work year than I have in years added together.  I am finally learning how to relax.
  • I am loved.  It’s a great feeling.  I am not sure someone has ever loved and appreciated me so much.  It brings a tear to my eye to write that.  I can’t get enough.  I want more than I can have.

It’s a big couple of months.  I want to run one more half marathon this season.  I have travel coming up for work and a busy schedule.  LUNA season is starting in April, trip to SF to start that off.  And hopefully spending time on getting my house and yard in order.  And my personal life, yeah, hopefully working on aspects of that too.

Race Report: 3M Half

January 19, 2014-3M Half Marathon

20th anniversary of the race.  I believe this was my 4th time.  3M was my first half.  3M is also my standing PR (2012).

Expo

I didn’t go.  I’ve been before.  It’s small and uninteresting to me.  They allow packets to be picked up by waiver (which I love), so my mom got mine.

Swag

I am pretty much going to whine every year until they start giving full size boxes of band-aids again.  It’s still the best swag bag you can get.  Tons of 3M products.  Sandpaper, tape, safety glasses, wrist brace, towel, earplugs, post-its, hand sanitizer, medical support wrap roll, a sample pack of band-aids, super glue, electrical tape.  And the tech shirt. IMG_0614[1]

Course

My standing PR is on this course.   That was 2 years ago, which was the last time I ran the race.  They changed the course last year again but changed it back to the 2012 course.

It’s billed as flat and fast.  I thought it was in 2012.  In 2014 it didn’t feel flat at all.

The course offered water and sports drink about every 2 miles.  In the middle our friends at Clif (parent to LUNA) had gels.   This year the course also had baby pools on the course to throw your wrappers in!  I loved that.  I only take gels at water stops, so I never have to worry about littering.  The Clif stop unfortunately wasn’t near water for at least another mile.

There were actually protesters at the start and midpoint of the race.  Apparently 3M kills forests.  Last time I checked, so did every other company in the world.  The only thing I worried about was they were on a bridge over the course at the midpoint, I am glad there was a cop watching them, I didn’t want anything thrown on me.  And  I am pretty sure their pre-printed signs were not recycled!  Hypocritical much?

Post Race

The new trend in Austin is to have food trucks come and sell you food after the race.  I don’t run with money and I also don’t throw any in my drop bag.  Just as well, I almost never eat post race food anyhow.IMG_0648[1]

There was enough at the finish for the average runner.  Bagels, bananas, oranges, and chips.  I took a banana, an orange, and a bag of HEB brand Doritos.IMG_0675[1]

Fun facts Friday

Well I don’t know if I would consider them all that fun this week!

  • My foot felt better after icing for a few days.  Ran on it Tuesday and it was fine.  After Thursday wasn’t so good.  It’s still sore across the top 😦
  • I may have a place of my own soon!
  • I am nervous about Sunday’s race.  I am not ready.  I keep telling myself to just have fun.
  • I took a personal day Wednesday.  Not something I do enough.  It was pretty awesome.
  • Just as soon as I posted my excitement for the 3 day weekend on Facebook, things started to change.  And not for the better. Saturday plans were completely scrapped.  I had no words, just tears.
  • There are 2 more days to this long weekend, but Saturday I had my heart set on for a while
  • AIP totally had reduced my inflammation.  HAD because I cheated once and it made me bloated and miserable.  Back to strict AIP with structured reintroduction.
  • I’m still a sucker for greeting cards
  • And goofing around at Buccee’s

Running Rogue

Headed to downtown East Austin for the Adios East Side celebration for Rogue running store.  They are moving to the heart of downtown west of IH35 to a bigger space Feb 1.

They kicked off the day with runs leaving at 6 and 7 am.   Met several friends down there for the event.  HUGE turnout.  I knocked out a great 8 miles, which is the longest i’ve run in over a month.  I thought about 10 but I didn’t want to push it.  I have a race next weekend that I will be participating in, but certainly not racing.  I’ve been registered since last May, which was wishful thinking on my part, since I was barely back to running then.

We stuck around for the party for a bit, then a trip to Trader Joe’s, and then back North.  It was a productive yet exhausting day of errands after that.

My mom is visiting, so her and I got a Netflix movie and settled in for the evening.  I went to get up to put my dinner plate in the dishwasher and I totally crushed my foot in my sister’s futon.  There was a bar holding the cushion on and I was sitting on my foot.  When I leaned forward to get up, the whole side of my left foot was smashed by the bar.  There was a crunch.  Hopefully it was bone pushing muscle against metal.  Anyhow, I have a swollen and sore foot.  It’s been iced off and on since it happened.

Hopefully this is just a bruise and nothing serious.  I was getting my hopes up about having a better race than Shiner next weekend!

Fun Facts Friday

  • I still want to learn how to swim properly.
  • My hair is finally starting to get longer!
  • I have 2 James Avery charm bracelets.  One is overflowing, the other is slowly being built.  Both are very special to me.  One day I am going to blog about the meaning of each.
  • I am dying to go crazy in the kitchen again, but I only halfway cook since I’m in a temporary situation.  It’s only me to cook for 90% of the time, which is still and adjustment for me.
  • AIP is hard.  I want tortilla chips.  And salsa.  And just a little cheese.  And chocolate. It’s only been 8 days, I need to give it a full shot to see if it helps.  I’ve been feeling better, but not 100%.
  • I have a race VERY soon.  I am SO not ready.  I may be running with mom if she’s not still injured.
  • Drive by Truckers AND Lucero are both coming to Austin soon, not soon enough!  I have tickets for both already
  • I miss my friends.  I need to make the rounds and see everyone I can soon
  • There is no better feeling than feeling loved and appreciated

2013: Year in Review

I honestly don’t remember a whole lot from 2013, especially the first half.  To be honest, looking back, 2013 was just ok overall.  Majority of the year was stressful workwise, especially until September.

January

I don’t remember much except that I was supposed to run Disney and I couldn’t.  3 month running hiatus due to adrenal issues.

Hosted godson’s baby shower.  Sorority chapter at Texas State activated.  Poured myself into yoga.

I do remember legislative session was in full swing.  I was working A LOT.

February

More legislative session, not running, and tired.

Our secretary at work died 😦

8 year anniversary with Dan.

My godson was born!!!

Had surgery at the end of February.

Got a stand up desk (YAY!)

March

More legislative session.  Stress.  Recovering from surgery.  SXSW.

Couldn’t defend my Thin Mint Sprint title 😦  Volunteered instead.

I started run-walking at the end of March.  It SUCKED.  I couldn’t control my breathing.

April

More legislative session.  Stress.  No rain.  More work stress.

San Francisco for LUNA Summit with all but 1 of my teammates.  Great time!  Started run-walking more.

May

More legislative session.  Stress.  No rain.  More work stress.  Traveled a little for work.  Dan’s parents came for a visit.

June

Legislative session over!  Still no rain.

Changed doctors.

I became a Godmother.

Jalapeno Half in Fort Worth.  The only summer race I’ve ever done, may be my last!  Great weekend with mom and sister.

Turning point with work role.  New assignment.  Still no rain.

July

Working my old duties AND new duties at work.  Still no rain.  In fact, it got worse.

Work trip with visits with some of favorites.

Vacation booked to Hawaii.

Stopped doing yoga much at all.

Finally got some overdue appreciation during a big work event.

Had a big weight gain out of no where (big for a short amt of time and my frame).  I didn’t change my food or exercise.  Frustrated.

August

This was the turning point of the year.

Went to see Jason Boland and Pat Green in New Braunfels and had a wonderful time with a bunch of old friends.  It was very reminiscent of the old days.

I separated from Dan.  Hardest thing i’ve ever had to say/do.  He agreed it was right.

Hawaiian vacation cancelled.

September

September was the longest month of my life.  Trying to get the last 8.5 years of my life sorted out.

I decided to live in our house until October.  After October 1, we would go our separate ways.   Except my way was me leaving my house.  My home.  Moved in with my sister.  He kept our house.

I only told my family and closest friends about the split.  That’s what he and I agreed to.

Spent a week in Houston to “find myself.”  Friends, family, sports, food.  To sum it up, it was a “game changer.”

Dove into my new work role 100% and made the decision to stop letting others dump on me.

October

Started over.  No home.  No money.

Overwhelming support from my family, friends, and coworkers.

Traveled a lot.  2 work trips and a trip to San Francisco for the Nike Women’s half.  Great memories made.  Love SF.

Started getting back to many things I used to do pre-Dan.  Things I put aside because he didn’t like them or I no longer had time.

Once word started to get out that I was single, it spread like wildfire.  All of a sudden I had texts and messages from people who wanted to date me.  This was very foreign and unexpected.  Actually, uncomfortable.

November

A little more work travel.

Not feeling great running.  No energy.  Not having an easy time lugging extra weight either.  Shiner Half was perfect weather for me, but the race for me was anything but.

I started missing my old house.  My stuff.  Being hostess for Thanksgiving.

Got my first Christmas job.  It was a great idea.  Not much money, but good people and warm hearts.

December

By far the best month of the year to me.  Despite missing my old house again.  My fireplace.  My Christmas tree.

I had another great month at work.  Got a raise.  Got lots of kudos.

I learned patience. Or the closest I will ever get to it.

I learned the true meaning of love.  Watching my godson open his Christmas gift.  Spending a weekend in yoga pants and an over-sized sweatshirt.  Carefully selected groceries.  Listening to others.

Cut back the running to almost nothing.

Waiting on salivary cortisol test to come in.  Fingers crossed my adrenals are fine.

~~I am almost 20 lbs heavier than I started the year.  I don’t have my own place.  Another whole year of frustrating visits to the doctors with no answers.

Even with those things hanging over my head, this year was ok.  I know 2014 is going to be a big year for me.  Big for my career, big for my health, and big for my relationships.   I will love more and work less.  This year I will NOT let vacation time roll!!!

I am going to make a new home for myself.  Spend more time with my godson.  Spend more time with family and friends.  Spend more time on me.

The Shiner aftermath

Not everyone came out in 1 piece apparently after our race 😦

One of the girls DNF and turns out it was a stress fracture.  Her second in the last year.  After we chatted for a while, she said her Dr. did only scans, no bloodwork.  Several different hormone imbalances and auto-immune conditions can make stress fractures more likely (I’ve read way too much to educate myself on that).  Hopefully her Dr. can look into why her leg is a persistent issue.

My knees are feeling better.  Not usually an issue, but I was limping on Saturday after the race.  Walked on the treadmill yesterday at the gym to loosen it up.  DOR today but stood at my desk and I was fine.  May try back to the gym again tomorrow to ease back in.

Sending healing vibes to everyone!  I want my gals all in 1 piece!
