Headaches

Certain people at work have been wearing me super thin.  I think it’s making me sensitive to all kinds of other silly things that I usually ignore.

Examples?

  • Diva Dash sent participants an email asking people to email in their finish times if they thought they may have placed in their age group.  WHAT?  I think they should skip awards all together, maybe it should have been planned a little better.  Most people weren’t even wearing watches and there was no finish line clock.  Plus they weren’t enforcing time penalties for skipped obstacles.  I have a time, I was wearing a watch, not really concerned about an award.  It still annoys me though.

  • I am NOT happy with the work done on my yard.  I really hope Dan will call that man back out there and tell him that his quality sucks.  My fence is nice though (different guy)

  • I’ve had to babysit far too many adults lately, especially at work.  I’ve been tiring myself trying to help others.  I need to focus on myself first.

  • Coworker who defended his food last week, yesterday was defending the fact that he didn’t attend the WW meeting.  Guess what?  I don’t care and didn’t ask.  Yes, i’d like to see you succeed, but I am still not the WW police.

  • Another coworker went on and on today about how he’s starting a new diet.  Guess the current one isn’t working (it’s always something new).  I didn’t have enough energy to explain a lifestyle change to him again.  I had this conversation with him IN THE GYM like 6 months ago as we were lifting.  I would think that maybe in that environment that more would sink in?

  • Supposedly the regional manager for the car dealership is in town and wants to see my car tomorrow.  I called to confirm the appointment for drop-off today and I never got a response.  NICE. Hopefully he doesn’t suck as bad as the dealership does.

Someone needs a nap, lol!  Tomorrow will be a better day and I will NOT let everything get to me.

Diva Dash

The 4:30 alarm came earlier than expected, especially with the late night before.  I’m not a coffee drinker, but I drove down the street to the only open place to get a cup to wake myself up.  I got to working in Dan’s home office.  Luckily I had everything I needed from everyone at work (turned out they were all busy too, so it worked out we did this Friday night/Saturday morning).  I was able to get the report to my boss at 6:45!  Had just enough time to make sure Michele was fed and dressed.  I tossed the laptop into the car, just in case, and we took off for the race.

We met my sister, mom, and the other girls at the course about an hour before.  Just as I predicted, everything was unorganized.  At least the shuttle part worked well for the early waves, which was our case.

We were in the 9 am wave.  When we registered that was the earliest wave, before they opened registration back up and kept adding more people, grrr!  We jumped into the corral as soon as they’d let us.  I didn’t want to be in the back of over 300 girls (there were 10 waves, 15 mins apart, over 3000 women total).  Met a girl at the start who was really nice, some of our non-runner friends were teasing her because she was alone.  (I often attend races alone, if I didn’t, i’d probably never do anything!).  I made the remark to her and the other girls that they shouldn’t tease her, because she was probably going to smoke them.  (which she did).  Here is a photo of the start.  That’s all of us in neon pink (can’t see me, i’m the last one in our group).  Said fast-girl  is already like 50 yards ahead and stayed that way.

I separated myself from the group almost immediately.  I knew that not everyone was going to finish together or even stay together.

I wasn’t really sure about strategy.  Was I supposed to have one?  I held behind the lead pack during the first run, because I wasn’t really sure.  After the first obstacle (balance on ropes), I passed a bunch of girls.  I ended up right behind superfast girl who won our wave.

In addition to the balance rope, there was a ball pit with giant balls people rolled at you, a maze, a really long tire course, a rope wall, and the series of water trampolines you had to navigate.

There were 2 waves before us, so there were still some gals on the course from the earlier waves.  Especially at the last obstacle, which was the water trampolines.  I had to wait 3 minutes to even attempt that portion, which was super annoying (there were only 2 sets of that obstacle).  At any point, you could take a time penalty if you wanted to skip something.  I should have skipped that one and took the penalty.  Even when I got on the trampolines, I had to wait for the girl in front of me to finish, which was forever.

I finished in 27-ish minutes (gun time).  It wasn’t chip timed.  The method for their timing was annoying and they didn’t track the people who took time penalties really at all.  They didn’t write down your time until you’d gone through the zig-zagged corral behind the mass of girls in front of you.  Not very accurate or organized at all.  Super-fast girl finished about 75 yards in front of me.  (come to find out later, she’s quite the athlete, placed in the top 10 in the marathon and won Warrior Dash central Tx, my friend Megan knows her!)

Alison and her coworker and sister finished about 20 minutes after me.  Too cute.  Everyone finished in 1 piece, although Michele twisted her ankle on 1 obstacle (may be sprained).

Here is our group, plus our friend Erin and one of her friends (non-pinks).

Another group shot…

My sister, Michele, and I, being ourselves after the race!

Not sure how a race with so many flipping sponsors and put on by a major fitness magazine had such weak packets (just an old magazine, socks, and a cinch bag) and post-race refreshment (beer, Luna bars, water, Honest T and food you had to buy).  We were all STARVING when we got to Kerbey Lane in South Austin and the wait for 10 people took way longer than it should have 😦  My food was totally worth it though.  I had the Nabil’s mid-east feast.

We then went to our nearest gym locations (yay for chains) and then met up for pedicures.  I hadn’t had one since last summer.  I have a rule that I don’t get them while training, unless it’s a special occasion (like being in a wedding).  I need my feet tough for the hot and humid races and training.  Since I am not training for anything, I figured we could all use the treat!

It was the perfect ending to Diva Day 🙂  All in all, it was a good time.  The most important part was having fun with the girls, which was accomplished.  Plus my 2 BBFs met and loved each other.  I’ve come to realize with my last few events, that even if the race isn’t what you expected, sometimes the company makes it completely worth the while!

Finally Friday

Day of rest for me.  I really thought about running, because I didn’t run much at all during the week, but I decided to rest.

Had half this badboy for dinner Thursday night and then the rest during lunch on Friday.  I get my money’s worth at Jason’s Deli.  Too bad I dropped the 2 side containers in the parking lot 😦   My favorite part, the bean salad, didn’t make it.

Hope they never start charging by the pound like HEB does.  We threw my boss a surprise birthday party at lunch (that’s why I planned to have simple leftovers for lunch).  I set up everything while she was in a meeting.  She was indeed surprised!  Mission accomplished 🙂  And I got to eat my awesome salad.

The afternoon flew by, before I knew it, I had to meet mom and sister, so we could drive to dinner with Michele.  Berryhill was good, as usual, although they messed up my order twice.

I love their fish tacos.  I just wish they had better sides other than their beans.  I HATE their rice and they recently changed their salsa too, which is now pretty watery 😦  At least they still have their spicy pickled veggies, I adore those.

Unfortunately during dinner, I got a text from boss with an assignment 😦  We still had to go to Runtex for packet pickup!  Packet pickup was unorganized and slow, just like i’d predicted.  We made it home at like 9 pm!

Then I had to switch hats and go into work mode.  Had to make some calls to some unfortunate souls that needed to be put to work too.  I ended up just setting my alarm for super early, so that I could hopefully finish the assignment before we had to leave for the race.

I felt horrible telling Michele I had to work instead of hanging out with her.  Plus it was the first day i’d seen Dan all week, since he’d just come in from Canada 😦

Not the way i’d pictured my Friday night.

Things I like Thursday: Friends, food, and fitness

My two BFFs are meeting for the first time ever on Saturday.  At a race.  A race I talked them both into doing.   I’ll admit, i’m a little excited about seeing them, more than about the race itself.  Honestly, I am still ALL WORKED UP about this silly race.

Alison used to work with me, before she moved to the town where her now husband is.  I’m not sure that we ever got anything done.  She’s the one that I followed to WW meetings, after seeing her great loss (over 50 lbs!).  We used to have  a tradition on Thursday nights, we’d cook dinner at her apartment and eat it while watching Grey’s Anatomy.  Miss that 😦

Here is Alison and I at her wedding, dancing to FloRida.

That is what happens when someone who  never drinks, does so on an empty stomach.  Don’t worry, I ate dinner and THREE pieces of her wedding cake that night.  I’ve had one drink since then.

My other BFF is Michele.  Michele is from San Antonio, just like me.  She rushed my sorority when I was a junior, that’s how we met.   My sister, Michele, and I are family (but i’m more of a mother hen to both).   We  spent many nights hitting up concerts, going to sorority events, and hitting up Whataburger at 2 am.  We all ended up joining WW after college, I think we had a little TOO much fun when we were kids.

I hope they get along.  They have a lot in common.  Both are newlyweds (sorta 1 got married March 2009, the other June 2010), both are WW members, snarky sense of humor, and they have ME!

Sensational Saturday

RUN

I picked my sister up and we drove on down to the lake.  Decided to lock our stuff up at the gym first before running.  Or not.  Morning girl at the gym decided to be 20 minutes late.  I was quickly losing motivation to run, didn’t help that I didn’t feel great.  It was already hot and humid, luckily no sun.

Eventually we got our gear stowed and set out.  She did the 4 mile loop, I did the 7 with some add-ons.  My goal had been 11, but because we were now 20 minutes behind schedule, I settled for 9.  On the trail detour I made a friend.  This is her business Backyard Fitness Austin.  I don’t usually run with anyone or people I don’t know, but Allison was a gem!  Totally made miles 4-7 a little more fun to learn about her, her business, and her 5 children.  Can you believe she has FIVE kids?  I want to look half that good after one!

FUN

Did I mention the reason we were pressed for time is that my BFF was driving in to town from San Antonio?  I hadn’t seen her since November and she rarely comes to Austin.  She made the trip since our sorority alumni function got cancelled in SA.  I was so happy she could make the trip, because I was bummed our function wasn’t happening.

I didn’t realize IH35 was closed though, luckily I guided her into downtown over the phone.  She met us at Whole Foods, so she could get some fun new things to try.  I forget how much I love the Flagship store, but what a freaking money suck it is.  I spent $35 on not a whole lot, but it was stuff I can’t find anywhere else.

We made our way over to Santa Rita Cantina because #1-I love it, #2 I had a Groupon to spend.  Since I wasn’t feeling so great still, I had the Santa Rita Pescado, instead of the enchiladas or pork loin that I had really wanted.  I love the fish, but it’s been a while since i’ve had a good enchilada out.  Everyone’s food was fabulous of course.  Good conversation and catching up.

We then did a little retail therapy.  After a few stops, we found matching neon pink tank tops for Diva Dash.  None of us are really pink girls, we’d wanted purple, but for the price and cut, this worked.  (I HATE clingy workout shirts) and if I am going to get wet and/or muddy, I wanted it to be cheap and not clingy.  It actually took less time than I thought to find a shirt that looked good on all of us, especially since the 2 of them actually have chests, lol!

Before we knew it, it was getting late.  She needed to get home to her hubby who was getting off of work, and sister and I were EXHAUSTED.  I dropped sister off at her car and made it home.  Busted out 2 of my purchases from Whole Foods for a snack.  Nacho Moms Vegan Queso (I got the fire roasted one) and Lentil Chips.  Both were pretty fabulous and gluten free!

That is the only photo I took all weekend.  I didn’t even take any photos of the girls having fun 😦  Fail, total fail.  No wonder I have no photos of anything.

The rest of the evening was pretty chill, I was exhausted.  Dan and I made lazy dinners.  I had nachos topped with veggies, cheese, and black bean burger.  Dan made pizza since we didn’t do pizza night this week.

Caught up on a little DVR and called it a night 🙂

Tx Gals, you know you want to do it ;-)

Come join us at Diva Dash!  I’ll admit, i’m a little scared.  I can dash, but I am NOT coordinated or strong, so this ought to be interesting!  So far my 2 BFFs, some friends from work and college, and my sister will be joining me!  I’m the only runner in my group right now, other than my sister, who runs occasionally.  Both BFF’s started a 5K Hal Higdon plan to get ready.  (if you didn’t know already, I LOVE Hal Higdon and am pretty much always on one of his plans, training or not.)

If you are interested, let me know!  We all signed up and are ready for some fun 🙂  There are waves every 15 minutes, starting at 9 am. Afterwards we may have a group lunch somewhere in the area.

The more the merrier!  I am working on my mom and my WW at Work Group today!
